Newborn Photography

Maybe your new baby is due to arrive soon or maybe they’ve already made their entrance! The early weeks with a baby go by in a blur of sleepless nights, new routines and learning how to parent on-the-job (I’ve been there - I’m a mama of 2!)

I'm Alex by the way, a Northumberland newborn photographer based near Morpeth. I take natural photos of new families in a baby's first few weeks of life.

Don’t let this time go by without booking a newborn shoot to document your new addition in all their tiny-ness! It’s my biggest regret that I didn’t book shoots for my babies. I thought I’d take enough photos myself, but when you’re a tired new mama its all too easy to let the time pass and suddenly they’ve changed and filled out and that wrinkly little newborn is gone. Sob!

 FAQs

  • Sessions take place in your own home. I prefer to photograph real moments with minimal posing and a studio session would not give the same results. I think in years to come, the ‘lifestyle’ images I take for you in your own home will hold a lot more memories than bland studio backdrops or your beautiful baby in some elf style outfit being posed like a frog! (yes, that’s really a thing!)

All I need is a window for decent light. I often use a bedroom so I can have baby laid on a bed for some detail shots of tiny toes etc and if you’ve put together a nursery for baby I love to get shots there too.

If we’re struggling for light, I always bring a flash with me. I aim it towards a white ceiling or light coloured wall rather than straight at baby, so it won’t disturb them. This also gives a natural light effect rather than a harsh flash look.

Please don't worry about it not being tidy enough! I'll move anything in the background that I need to, you don't need to do anything special before a session.

  • Home sessions have loads of benefits. Apart from anything, it’s so much easier when your baby is brand new, if you don’t need to worry about getting ready and getting out of the door! You’ll have all of your baby’s things around you, without needing to remember to pack everything to bring to a studio.

I also think being in your own home just feels more comfortable, which usually means more relaxed photos. If we need to stop for a feed or a nappy change, it's easy and stress free!

I photograph real moments with minimal posing because I think in years to come, the ‘lifestyle’ images I take for you in your own home will hold a lot more memories than bland studio backdrops and awkward poses.

  • I’m based in Morpeth, Northumberland. I travel throughout Northumberland for Newborn photography sessions, such as to Alnwick, Rothbury, Ashington, Blyth, Cramlington, Hexham etc. I’m also happy to travel into Newcastle and North Tyneside.

For round trips of more than 25 miles, I make 40p per additional mile charge, to cover fuel. If you aren’t sure I’ll cover your area, please just pop me a message!

  • I’ll accept bookings as early as the 20th week of pregnancy, where I book you in by due date and we can set a firm shoot date once baby arrives.

I’m also happy to help if baby has already arrived, if I can possibly fit you in, I will!

  • I think for those delicious wrinkly newborn photos, you ideally need to have a session within the first 3-4 weeks, because as you’ll know or will soon find out, they grow and change at an incredible pace! I’m more than happy to photograph babies of any age though, I’ll just tailor the session accordingly.

  • Yes! I am a massive advocate for parents getting in the photos. It’s all too easy (especially for mamas) to be behind the scenes taking the snaps on your phone, but your kids will want to look back at photos of their childhood and see you there with them. One day you’ll be gone and that’s all they’ll have left. It is so, so important to be in the frame and I will never stop shouting about it!

I know you might not feel “at your best” if you’ve just given birth, but this is as fleeting a moment in your life as it is in babies life, and when you look back at these photos in 10/15/20 years time, you won’t see a few extra pregnancy pounds. You’ll be too busy wondering where the time went and how that tiny dot of a baby grew into the child, teenager or adult in front of you!

As for siblings, if they’re available I love to include them too. I usually will get the whole family group and the siblings-with-baby shots pretty early on in the session, before we lose their attention!

  • On booking you pay a session fee of £175.00. This covers the session time and includes 3 digital images, which you can select from a Viewing Gallery of 25+ images.

Beyond that, you can add on additional digital images, print packages and albums if you'd like a physical keepsake.
